3rd Wave

[Jones is a deep, deep sleeper but he wakes with the sunrise. Each day is a new, hellish experience on the Barge but he scowls and stomps his way through them regardless.

Imagine his surprise when this morning he opens his door - releasing a small flood of his usual seawater, which, thanks to Maintenance, is contained by a make-shift dam - and spots children running about.

Not the handful of children he knows to be part of the Barge. New ones. And smaller people are easier to bully than full-grown ones.

Resolving to go about his day unbothered by the mechanics of the Admiral, Davy instead storms his way to the mess hall, literally using his claw to forcefully swat aside anyone smaller than four feet]


I'll thank whoever remains their true, full size to keep the vast majority of whelps under control. I've a mind to toss them over the side one by one; no ship is in need of this many cabin boys. No navy is.

Mind your brats. Or I will.

[Jones in turn looks unimpressed, clacking his claw in the face of the camera]

Don't I, lad?

No.

You're on the safe list for now, but if you hurt anyone, that's going to change.

[It's not that he's unimpressed. It's that he learned bravado early.]

Why is that so funny.

Because you're a boy playing at being a man. Likely in the absence of any true man in your family.

[For a moment, Dean is shocked into absolute silence, dumbstruck.

Then his face gets very red.]

You don't know what you're talking about, you asshole.

[tentacruelest]

[Jones can see he's struck a nerve and begins to chuckle, lighting up his pipe]

Are you the little man of the house, Dean Winchester? Do yeh tend your mother while your father's off being a drunken, lazy lay-about? Do yeh think he took other women to bed while your mother weeped?

[surfaceshine]

[This, of course, only makes it worse, which an older Dean would be well aware of. At least at this age he has an excuse for being able only to react.

Dad would be angry and disappointed. But Dad isn't here.]

Shut up. Or I'll make you shut up.

threadjack!

[itstopped]

Just ignore him. [He doesn't bother to filter it, his eyes narrowed and his jaw clenched tight as he says it.] He's just being a bully.

[surfaceshine]

[Dean should be used to dealing with this by now; he's not self-aware enough to wonder at it, but he is just accustomed enough to the bubbling anger to take the unexpected, unlooked for out when Felix offers it.

His anger doesn't diminish, but he can redirect it.]

He doesn't know anything about what he's talking about!

[itstopped]

[He tries not to roll his eyes, and sort of halfway succeeds.] He knows it bothers you. That's all he cares about.

threadjack!

[surfaceshine]

[He knows, alright, he knows. But. Temper.]

I know that!

I... dammit. [And that's just enough to give him the chance to choose to hang up.]

[Well, score one for common sense. And... having bully experience. Felix doesn't usually do a lot of fighting back -- he prefers to take exactly the route he just advised Dean to -- but he's sort of buzzed on the energy of actually having other kids pay attention to him and listen to him here, and it gives him enough courage to draw in a deep breath and address Davy, coolly, with:]

You know, you should really get that looked at.

[Okay, a zinger it's not, but he feels pretty proud of himself when he hangs up anyway.]
