1st Wave

[Down in the depths of Zero sits a sulking, furious squid creature, wrapping his tentacle-like hand around his communicator. Davy Jones has been looking it over for the past day, and is thus far unimpressed. A way to talk to the rest of the crew? What was the point? They had nothing worthwhile to discuss]

Pardon the intrusion of an old pirate captain, but I believe I've requested to see his grace the Admiral, if he so deigns to get his fat arse off the bridge and address my concerns.

Bah - you think a day's stay in the brig will ease th' way of our voyage together? You think your pathetic lot of untested boys, women and slaves is enough to keep Davy Jones at bay for long? You're more of a fool than I'd taken you for.

And the next bilge rat what comes down here prattling on about inmates and other worlds is the next I mark for death.

[She fishes her paperback out of her bag - a lurid and well-thumbed volume in a language that's never been near Earth - and curls contentedly into the chair.]

[With a derisive snort, Davy turns his face away, staring at the wall. He can be patient, but it's not easy without a ship to run or an organ to play]

[Iris is not usually very good at patience, herself; but it's been a stressful, eventful few days and she could use the rest.

So she'll just be right here. Chilling with her book.]

[Davy is silent for long moments, but eventually a tinkling bit of music from a sad lullabye is heard as his tentacled hand slides over the heart-shaped locket he holds in his palm]

[She does a creditable job of pretending not to notice, although inwardly Iris' whole being pricks its ears up at the music like a dog hearing its master's footsteps.

Eventually, if the music keeps up, she'll surrender to the impulse to harmonise: very gently, soft, low and wordless, and without looking up.]

[As soon as Iris starts to hum, Davy abruptly cuts off the sound, looking murderous. He stands and lumbers over to the bars, glowering down at Iris]

[She looks up, one eyebrow raised.]

You started it.

You will sit there and be silent, or cease sitting there at all.

[Iris grins, broad and infinitely amused.]

I'm sure you were very impressive back on your ship, lovey. But you're not very bright, are you?

Never mind. I expect the penny'll drop sooner or later.

[It's sad but true; Davy as of late seems to be getting constantly outsmarted, and he knows it. Fuming, he sits back down, detestation clear in his gaze]

You cannot hope to keep me here forever.

I can't imagine why I'd want to do that, lovey. No fun for anyone. No, this is just till you calm down and start listening.

Listening to self-appointed wardens tell me I am their prisoner and I am to behave myself if I am ever to sail the seas again?

Listening to folk who've been 'ere long enough to know the ropes tell you 'ow to get yourself back where you want to be, aye. That'd be right.

I am no longer in the business of listening to those who have a hand in my continued imprisonment.

Cutting off your tentacles to spite your face, in other words. You'll run out of 'em long before we run out of patience, sweetheart.

Do they grow back?

They do if I am not separated from my ship.

[There's a flicker, now, of vicious amusement in her smile; perhaps because she got bored with her paperback and started flipping through the network conversations.]

Well now. That might get a touch inconvenient for you, eh?

You know as well as I that he did not. But a Captain who ferries the dead should command respect in those who proclaim not to fear death.

...The what now? That doesn't make a lick of sense, lovey, and it takes a lot to make me say that. Are you trying to say that breaking someone's neck counts as self-defense because you're a hearse driver, or what?

He did not threaten me, but it was still my duty to teach him his place.

[For the first time in this conversation, Iris' face shows actual annoyance.]

You've been 'ere five minutes, sunshine. What you know about anyone's place 'ere could be written painlessly on your bloody left eyeball. No. That don't fly with me, and only a coward hides 'is atrocities behind duty. Try again.

[With a dark laugh, Jones eyes the annoyance with no small amount of glee]

You've cut me to the quick. I enjoyed making him suffer; to teach him that death is something to fear, and pain more so. He'll be carrying that lesson for some time.
